Unfortunately Vista seems to have been neglected, and Windows Vista update issues have meant that many people haven't downloaded security patches. There were a large amount of security issues related to Windows XP, but eventually numerous service packs and security updates patched up all the holes. Many people have resorted to hours of Vista troubleshooting and risked Windows Vista update issues to get their anti-virus software running, and in the end resorted to buying new versions of their software. Windows Vista also included a compatibility mode, but it never seemed to work quite so well. When Windows 7 came out, Microsoft thoughtfully included a Windows XP compatibility mode so that older software could run.
